Turning Points Awarded $5,000 MLK Day of Service Grant for FREE Mammograms

BRADENTON – Turning Points was awarded a $5,000 MLK Day of Service grant through the State College of Florida and the Florida Legislature for FREE mammograms and other breast imagery in partnership with Manatee Diagnostic Center. SCF awarded nearly two dozen service grants totaling nearly $84,000 for projects throughout Manatee and Sarasota counties for Martin Luther King Day of Service.

This grant allows the Turning Points Medical Clinic volunteer doctors, nurse practitioners, physician’s assistants with assistance from the LECOM medical and pharmacy students to prescribe basic mammograms, bilateral and unilateral mammograms, and unilateral limited and complete breast ultrasounds and receive these services directly at Manatee Diagnostic center.  This program’s goal and purpose is to provide free mammograms to the underserved women in our community. These women are the mothers, sisters, daughters, seniors, veterans who have no access to mammograms because they do not have medical insurance. Annual mammograms can detect breast cancer early — when it is most treatable.

Turning Points provides, facilitates and coordinates services to men, women and children who are homeless or are at the risk of homelessness.  The Medical Clinic at Turning Points is an important program for the community. The FREE medical services are here for people who meet eligibility requirements of age, residency and income, to ensure that their health needs are addresses. With the support of LECOM and dedicated volunteer and paid medical staff, the medical clinic provided care during 4,010 visits in the past year.

Turning Points is excited to start this new partnership with Manatee Diagnostic Center and thankful to be awarded the MLK Day of Service grant through SCF.
